Dear SHPE UMD Familia:
Welcome to the Spring 2021 semester at the University of Maryland! I hope the winter break allowed you time to rest, relax, and spend time with your friends and families during the holidays. While we are still in a pandemic, I share hope with you all that with adherence to COVID-19 prevention guidelines, we will approach a “new normal” and host in-person events soon.
This semester provides us a more unique opportunity to host a number of social, networking, and volunteer events after the conclusion of the Fall hiring season. While we will still host corporate events, we want to focus on spending more time with our fellow Latinx STEM peers outside of class, especially for our seniors who will be graduating this year. We want to continually recognize those who are graduating virtually, be it last year or this year, as they resiliently stayed and completed their studies in this tumultuous time.
For those who transferred into the University of Maryland or into the Clark School of Engineering, we welcome you to our community of Latinx STEM students and their allies. For everyone else returning this year, we are glad you can join SHPE UMD for another semester!
Our first GBM will be this Tuesday, February 9, 2021, from 6-7 PM. We will welcome our community back to school by presenting our organization once again, as well as some updates from the past Fall semester. We will also play some games and get to know more about the Latinx community at the University of Maryland. Please feel free to share this event with your friends, as everyone is invited. Get ready for our extraordinary official Fall Welcome event as we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month with our GBM #2! Meet your e-board, learn about SHPE’s mission and vision, and play some games with your SHPE Familia!! This Tuesday at 6 pm on Zoom – see the event description for the zoom link and password!
Don’t worry! Your 2020-21 SHPE E-board is still working hard to come up with and host engaging and informative events for our members!
RLDC is a wrap! Not only did we get to see other great UMD Alumni (amongst 400+ SHPE members), but we personally had the chance to talk to and take a picture with THE Raquel Tamez, CEO of SHPE! Not half bad for a weekend, right?
UMD SHPE and the Washington Wizards take on the Chicago bulls in this classic match-up! We got the chance to see the Bulls and Wizards up close and personal before the game, and oh… may I say, we won.
Today the SHPE familia gave back to the ones in need! All the trails mix packaged by the familia will be donated to Martha’s table, a non-profit that’s devoted to leveraging the access of healthy foods for children and their families!
UMD’s SHPE chapter had a PHENOMENAL time in Phoenix, Arizona! Among the 9500 SHPE members that attended this year, this chapter had the chance to interact and network with Latinx professionals and as well as listen to talks within the tech and engineering industries 🙂
This year’s national convention was the largest it’s ever been in the past 8 years, and this familia couldn’t be more grateful to be apart of it. #SHPE2019 #SHPEFamilia #Region4
