The SHPE Jr. Program is a national initiative designed to extend the benefits of SHPE to minority high school students. Our chapter hopes to encourage high school students to pursue careers in science, technology, and engineering by providing them with tutoring, mentoring and additional resources within SHPE and outside of SHPE.

In response to the high concentration of minorities in College Park and the surrounding area, the SHPE UMD Chapter is very enthusiastic about our newly established SHPE Jr. Chapter at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD. Furthermore, SHPE - UMD looks forward to expanding to other nearby high schools. Working directly under the UMD Chapter, the SHPE Jr. Chapters are a valuable resource for students interested in science fields.

The SHPE Jr. Chapter will encourage participation in local science fairs and technical competitions, attendance to science camps, and involvement in the yearly SHPE Pre-College Event. Through the SHPE Jr. Chapters, high school students will benefit from direct interaction with engineering college students and industry professionals, while gaining leadership experience as they learn to govern their own student organization.
