Our History

SHPE granted a chapter to UMCP in May 1988 to a group of 27 Hispanic students. Since then, SHPE-UMD chapter has been an organization of diverse students in engineering and science at the University of Maryland. SHPE strives to support the professional growth, the development of social responsibility, the assurance of educational opportunities for students as well as long-term achievements of Hispanic self-determination and self-actualization. SHPE-UMD's goal is to assist students in all engineering and science fields with their academic and professional development.

Our members have continuously shown an amazing commitment to the SHPE mission as thousand upon thousands of hours of community service have been contributed.

For this and other work, SHPE-UMD has won prestigious awards. Awarded by SHPE National. In 2010 National Conference three of our members placed top three in the Extreme Engineering Challenge competition. In 2011 at ETLC we won the Academic Bowl and were awarded most improved chapter and chapter of the year in the North-East Region. SHPE-UMD has also been awarded numerous of other awards on the University of Maryland campus by MICA and OMSE.

Our Vision

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at UMD seeks to empower the Hispanic community of College Park to attain careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and excel as technical and professional leaders

Our Mission

Enable our college students to find careers in STEM, Provide professional development for our members, Expand our members networks while providing a sense of inclusion, Improve our neighborhoods through community service, Promote STEM awareness among the youth in the community, Encourage middle and high school students to pursue degrees in STEM.
